Unum

Unum is a new way to perform and experience a performance, it is not a media--or a digital art project, nor is it squeezing existing work into a new format. The videos are not edited, the audience member will see the performance as it happened, there and then. They are pieces are designed to be performed to one audience member only: you.

 

Within the technology there is a playful interaction between viewer and performer--the audience member has the power to choose where to look, but the performer chooses the location of the camera and the content of the performance. Like a game, the performer offers somethings to look at, but the viewer can boldly choose to look wherever they want. Though separated by time and space, if the performers stands seemingly close to the viewer, looking directly through the screen, into their eyes, a strong feeling of intimacy can still be achieved; evoking the genre of ASMR (automatic sensory meridian response). The virtual and the intimate meet in a one on one moment, though achieved through distance and technology, it elicits a true human interaction.

 

Circus arts can be visceral and highly physical. Although the push to accomplish a feat is real, it can go unnoticed on stage, perhaps concealed by the performer, or missed by the audience. Here, the performers cannot hide, they are under the all-seeing gaze of the °360 camera, which is scary, intimidating but also extremely exciting, exactly what performing is.

 

The circus artists in the first series of Unum are Inka Lilja (GRM-FIN), Emile Pienault (CAN), and Sakari Männistö (FIN). The first three Unum performances are supported by the Finnish Institute and produced by the Finnish contemporary circus company Agit-Cirk with Sakari Männistö.

Unum käyttää hyödykseen 360° videotekniikan immersiivistä luonnetta, esitykset on suunniteltu yhdelle katsojalle: sinulle. Unum on uusi tapa tehdä ja kokea esitys; kyseessä ei ole media- tai digitaide -teos, eikä olemassa olevan esityksen uuteen formaattiin ujuttaminen. Olemme esiintyjiä ja ammattitaitomme on esitysten valmistamisessa. Videoita ei leikata, vaan esitykset nähdään alusta loppuun asti kuten ne tapahtuivat, katsoja kokee teoksen, kuin olisi ollut paikan päällä sitä katsomassa. Esiintyjä on katseen alla, lavalla, epätäydellisenä, ihmisenä.

 

Katsojalla on valta valita mihin suuntaan milloinkin katsoo, mutta esiintyjällä on valta valita kameran sijainti, ympäristö ja esityksen sisältö. Esityksistä tulee kuin peli tai leikki, jossa esiintyjä tarjoaa katsojalle vaihtoehtoja ja katsoja voi katsoa mitä julkeudessaan haluaa. Ruudun läpi, lähietäisyydeltä suoraan silmiin katsomisen kautta teokset linkittyvät ASMR (autonomous sensory meridian response) -genreen. AMSR triggeröinti tapahtuu henkiökohtaisen huomion kautta, esitys tapahtuu juuri sinulle, ja vain sinulle, lähietäisyydeltä.

 

Sirkus on fyysistä, se on hämmästyttävää ja hengästyttävää, lavalla yksityiskohdat, hiki, kipu, ponnistus ja voimankäyttö voivat jäädä vaille huomiota, joko tarkoituksella tai vahingossa. Tämän teoksen sisällä, emme tekijöinä pysty piiloutumaan, olemme paljaana kaikennäkevän °360 kameran silmän alla. Se on esiintyjälle jännittävää, epämukavaa ja pelottavaakin, mutta samalla juuri sitä, mitä esiintyminen useimmiten on.

 

Unum -projektin ensimmäisissä esityksissä esiintyvät sirkustaiteilijat Inka Lilja (FIN/GER), Emile Pienault (CAN), sekä Sakari Männistö (FIN). Ensimmäiset kolme teosta valmistetaan Suomi-Instituutin Together Alone rahoituksen tukemana. Unum -teossarjan taustalla on suomalainen nykysirkusryhmä Agit-Cirk.
